Wellness Through Chiropractic

Defining Wellness:

Chiropractors are the originators of the wellness movement, being the only health care professionals who recognize the body’s natural ability to heal and it's relationship to healthy spinal column function. This is why they have spent over 100 years educating their patients on the benefits of the wellness lifestyle. Proper nutrition, exercise and routine chiropractic care helps the body to perform at maximum efficiency.

Wellness: Improving Function

The term improved function has been used to help patients understand the benefits of chiropractic care and the role it plays in true wellness. The body is made up of muscles, organs and glands that are all controlled by the nervous system, and the nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The brain sends signals down the spine and to the nerves, these signals tell the heart to beat, the lungs to breathe, the stomach to digest, the glands to produce necessary hormones, and so on.

It’s when these signals from the nerves to the muscles, organs and glands are impaired, that the body begins to lose proper function and symptoms begin to occur. Usually pain is not realized for a very long time and it is often the last symptom to appear.

Mainstream medicine often views subtle symptom expression as something that should be eliminated through chemicals or pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately, it is often this action, masking early symptoms, that allows the body to fail in it's attempt to adapt, and the health problem worsens. Finally, a state of crisis is reached.

As a wellness chiropractor Dr. Burns recognizes that the symptoms are there for a reason, an alert from your body that something is wrong, and begins to seek the cause of the problem.

How Stressors Can Affect Wellness

What you may not realize is that your body is constantly adapting; it is self-regulating and self-healing. When this ability is compromised, and the adaptations and compensations are no longer adequate, we feel dis-ease, fatigue, pain and finally the burden of disease.

Physical, emotional and chemical stressors, or as they are called by Dr. Burns, the Three T’s (traumas, thoughts and toxins), are always present in varying degrees. The more obvious examples of stressors that are physical are falls, jolts or sudden impacts to the spine, even micro-trauma caused by improper posture and one-sided repetetive movement can stress our system. Chemical stress, such as poor food choices, exposure to smog, smoke, harsh chemicals, use of over-the-counter medications, drugs and prescriptions and emotional stress from our work or home environment, financial, etc. We all have stressors, some of us more than others...what matters is your ability to adapt to stress...your General Adpative Potential or GAP. We aim to widen the GAP, and improve your ability to adapt, by enhancing the performance of your nervous system and letting your body do the job it was designed to do.

Finding True Wellness

The term wellness is being used and abused by a society that recognizes its importance, but is unclear about its application. True wellness is achieved when all of the body’s systems are receiving their signals from the brain and are properly providing the body with what it needs to not only survive, but also thrive. Too often, we mistake an absence of symptoms as the presence of health, when the reality is that the two are not even related.*

Dr. Burns recognizes the value of preventive care and the role it plays in finding true wellness. With regular adjustments, spinal health is maintained, encouraging proper nervous system function, and allowing the body to perform at its best!

Client Testimonial

Five years ago I was referred to a neurosurgeon for pain and numbness in both arms.  He diagnosed stenosis, arthritis and collapsing disks, and he highly recommended surgery.

Not wanting to accept surgery as my only option, I was referred to Dr. Burns.  Since then, I have been maintained by Dr. Burns with visits at about six week intervals.  I live an active lifestyle at 55-cycling; chain-sawing; kayaking; hiking; wood-stacking; yard care and gardening.  I am amazed at how these regular visits allow me to lead the life that I want without the physical impairment or consequences!
